Dependent Child Turns 19

Your child's 19th birthday may not seem as significant as their 16th or 21st, but it may affect their benefits under the Health Fund. Dependents who are age 19 - 23 must provide proof of full-time student status in order to remain covered under the Health Fund. Please review the information listed below and follow the steps in the checklist to ensure continued coverage for your dependent child.

Benefit Plan Checklist

If your child is a full time student, you must submit a completed Student Status Verification Form each semester. This form will be mailed to you automatically each term. When the completed form is returned, coverage for your dependent child will be continued. Please note that it is policy of the Health Fund to extend coverage for 90 days past the semester end date to allow for coverage during the winter/summer school breaks, if the child resumes classes the following semester as a full time student.

If your child ceases to be a full time student (reducing classes to half time status or leaves school), you must notify the Administrative Office within 60 days of the event. A delay in timely notification may make you liable for any health claims paid by the Fund for services rendered after your dependent ceased to be eligible. Additionally, if you do not notify the Administrative Office within 60 days of the event, the child will lose his or her COBRA rights.

If you do not supply evidence of student status or if your child is no longer a student, the child may be eligible for COBRA Continuation Coverage.

If your child becomes disabled prior to turning age 19, the child may be eligible to receive a disability extension of coverage.
